2013/8/19

Marc Marquez has completed a dominant weekend by winning the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, leading home Dani Pedrosa in the third Repsol Honda Team one-two finish of the season. Yamaha Factory Racing¢s Jorge Lorenzo completed the podium as Valentino Rossi beat Cal Crutchlow and Alvaro Bautista to fourth. Marquez¢s victory ensures that the Spaniard has topped every session he has taken part in this weekend – something not done since Casey Stoner dominated the Australian Grand Prix event of last year. The victory marks Marquez¢s third consecutive premier class race win and confirms a clean sweep of American successes this season, having also triumphed at Texas and Laguna Seca.
From pole position, another poor start from the 20-year-old rookie saw Marquez fall behind both Lorenzo and teammate Pedrosa. He would overtake the pair on Laps 9 and 13, respectively, and – as his rivals continued to feel the effects of injured collarbones – would cross the finish line almost three and a half seconds ahead.

Pedrosa looked to be finishing the 27-lap race in third position, but sprang a surprise by slipstreaming ahead of Lorenzo at the start of the penultimate lap. For both Pedrosa and Lorenzo, this marked their first podium finishes since the Catalan Grand Prix in Barcelona some two months ago.

In fourth place, Lorenzo¢s teammate Rossi rose from ninth on the grid and only on the final tour got the better of Monster Yamaha Tech3¢s Crutchlow and GO&FUN Honda Gresini¢s Bautista, who had enjoyed a race-long battle.
Stefan Bradl finished seventh for LCR Honda MotoGP. Rounding out the top ten were Crutchlow¢s teammate Bradley Smith and Ducati Team pairing Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso; the English debutant (who had run as high as fourth on Lap 1, thanks to a superb start) leapfrogged both of the red bikes as Hayden pushed Dovizioso wide at the final corner. This was a near repeat of a final-corner incident at Assen from which Smith also benefitted.

Heading to next weekend¢s bwin Grand Prix České republiky at Brno, Marquez (188 points) has extended his championship lead to 21 points from Pedrosa (167). Reigning World Champion Lorenzo (153) now sits 35 points behind the leader.

Dominant Marquez breaks record on way to Indianapolis pole
Marc Marquez continued his domination of the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix weekend by claiming a spectacular pole position on Saturday, beating the previous pole record by over eight tenths of a second. The Repsol Honda Team rider will share Sunday¢s front row with his closest title rivals, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa.

The fight at the end of Q2 was be to be thrilling, but Marquez¢s eventual effort of 1¢37.958 sees him claim pole by the huge margin of half a second. Behind, just fractions separated positions two to four which are filled by Yamaha Factory Racing¢s Lorenzo and Repsol Honda¢s Pedrosa – both still recovering from crashes at previous events – as well as Monster Yamaha Tech3¢s Cal Crutchlow. Alvaro Bautista delivered a solid lap for a top five grid spot on the GO&FUN Honda Gresini machine, sealing a second row placing as American Nicky Hayden led Ducati Team¢s charge from sixth. Behind Tech3¢s Bradley Smith who will start seventh, the biggest disappointment arguably came for LCR Honda MotoGP¢s Stefan Bradl who had been inside the top three in all but one of the practice sessions; the German¢s session was ruined by a crash at Turn 1 and he will start the race from eighth place.

Completing the top ten and frustrated to be behind several satellite riders were 2008 race winner Valentino Rossi (Yamaha Factory Racing) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), while Energy T.I. Pramac Racing¢s Andrea Iannone was 11th.

Marc Marquez led a Repsol Honda Team one-two in Friday¢s second free practice session for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix. The championship leader, who had already topped the morning period, maintained first position into the afternoon as teammate Dani Pedrosa and LCR Honda MotoGP¢s Stefan Bradl joined him inside the top three.
As Marquez reduced the leading time to 1¢39.502, Pedrosa – who briefly held P1 himself – was denied by less than one tenth of a second. Bradl - who suffered a fall this afternoon – jumped ahead of World Champion Lorenzo in the closing moments, who in-turn pipped Monster Yamaha Tech3¢s Cal Crutchlow to fourth place. On the second Yamaha Factory Racing machine, Lorenzo¢s teammate Valentino Rossi rounded out the first group of six.

Expectations are high for Marquez this weekend. Will he make it?

Positions seven to ten were occupied by Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini), Bradley Smith (Tech3) and Ducati Team duo Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso.
